Haddon Training has been working with The Hunting Office to ensure that skills from previous generations of hunt staff are passed on to new entrants. The future of all forms of hunting will rely upon the training, education and qualifications for all staff coming into the industry, to ensure animal welfare is maintained to the highest standard in the future.

“The Apprenticeship gives our future huntsmen the opportunity to receive guidance from experienced members of hunt staff. By living and working in kennels, they understand the importance of hound welfare, improve their hunting knowledge and skill, and also obtain a formal qualification.”

“An Apprenticeship provides the knowledge and skills hunt staff need to work in hunt service. The Apprenticeship gives young people a valuable qualification with transferable skills that will enable them to make career progression within the hunting industry. We are now in a position of having Huntsmen who have graduated from the programme, that are now responsible for the training of new applicants; thus investing again in the future of hunting.

  • Teaching, learning and assessment

Apprentices will be regularly assessed in the workplace by their Trainer-Coach with testimonies from the relevant Employer/Trainer.

Throughout the apprenticeship journey, every learner will learn the core apprenticeship components, taking part in monthly sessions with their Trainer-Coach, accessing different learning systems and spending time learning new skills, knowledge and behaviours whilst at work. The Equine Groom apprenticeship is then assessed by a final end point assessment (EPA).

Every four months the apprentice will sit practice tests and assessments in preparation for their EPA. Once they are ready they will sit a knowledge test, be observed at work and take part in a professional discussion. These are all designed to prove competence in the workplace and each of our learners is fully supported in their preparation for this.

All our Trainer-Coaches are experts in the equine industry and will be on hand to support apprentices throughout their apprenticeship. They will check knowledge and understanding through a variety of methods including written assignments, workbooks, tailored resources, and observations before agreeing for a learner to sit their final endpoint assessment.
